BM Bureau, Oct 20 : Two wheeler riders riding bikes without helmets will now have to face harsh penalty combined with higher fine as the State Transport Department has issued a circular in this regard on Monday. According to the circular, driving licence (DL) of the bike riders found riding bike without helmets will be suspended while the penalty has been augmented to Rs 1000 from the present Rs 500. ·

It may be recalled that the state government had just slashed the penalty making it Rs 500. However, the state government has now notified a stringent rule under which the driving licence of violators will be suspended for three months. The notification, dated October 16, was issued on Monday October 19.·

The decision was taken following a direction by the Supreme Court-appointed road safety committee, which held a meeting with the chief secretary and other stakeholders.·

Helmets are also made compulsory for children above 4 years. Which means along with the rider, the pillion rider too will have to wear the helmet.

The government has notified the necessary changes in Section 194D of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 for including the suspension of licence. All RTOs have been directed to furnish details of DLs suspended for violation of the helmet rule, by the fifth day of every month.
