Truckers in Lurch Due as Old Bridge Closed near Ramnagar

BM Bureau, July 29 : Heavy traffic jam is witnessed near Ramnagar on Belagavi-Goa NH4A since last three days due to the weak bridge on the highway . The old Astoli Bridge about 2 kms from Ramnagar has become weak after the heavy floods to Pandhari River near Ramnagar last week.

The highway authorities too are clueless about the traffic movement as the risk cannot be taken to allow the vehicles from the old bridge. The new parallel bridge is also incomplete leaving the truckers in lurch.

Supplies to Goa too are expected to  be affected if the problem is not solved as the helpless truckers are looking forward for a help from authorities in Goa to resolve the traffic issue as the delivery of goods to Goa has been delayed due to the stranded trucks.

About 300 Goa bound trucks and other heavy vehicles have been left stranded since Monday as the police authorities have held up the traffic on the stretch owing to the old Astoli Bridge that has gone weak.

“We are here since last three days and heading for Goa. However, stating that the heavy traffic cannot be allowed on the weak Astoli Bridge the police has held up our vehicles hence we are going through tough times. We are left starving as neither do we have money to buy food nor do we have clean water to drink,” the truck drivers who are left stranded told media persons.

On the other hand the NHAI authorities too have expressed inability in addressing the issue due to the unexpected floods that has left everything devastated in the region.

“ The old bridge is weak and may collapse if the movement of traffic is allowed . The new bridge incomplete. We have certain technical and legal snags due to which the new bridge cannot be completed soon,” Kiran, a senior NHAI official said.
