Belgaum Girl makes it to Armed Forces Medical College

BM Bureau, Nov 9 : Anna Mascarenhas, a student of the KLE Independent College, Belagavi has made the people of the region proud as she has been selected for MBBS degree at Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune.

She is the first girl from Belagavi, Goa and Southern Maharashtra region to be selected by this prestigious medical college. Before selection to AFMC Anna had secured 671 marks out of 720 marks and had a choice to join any medical college.

Anna is among the select 25 girls who were selected at All India level. “ Getting admission to a government medical college may be easy, however, we coudn’t believe that our daughter could get selected at AFMC. It is certainly proud moment for us , especially for the people of Belagavi ,” Annas parents Rosemary and Ignatius Mascarenhas said.

Anna’s primary and secondary education was completed at the Divine Providence school here. She is also a karate black belt champion and enjoys sports and music. “I would like to serve the nation by becoming an Army Medical Officer,” a delighted Anna said.

Anna’s mother is a teacher at Peeranwadi Kannada Primary school whereas her father Ignatius Mascarenhas runs a CNC service company at Udyambag.

Meanwhile, Bishop of Belaum Rev Dr Derek Fernandes has congratulated Anna stating that the community is proud to have one more woman officer in the Indian Army. “ Anna has not only made us proud , but has also set an example for other girl students who are pursuing their dreams ,” Bishop Fernandes said seeking Gods blessings on the young officer.
