Integration of Medicine, Music, Meditation, Movement to serve the Society is need of the hour : Dr. Rajendra Bhandankar

BM Bureau : Noted orthopedic surgeon and Chief Joint Replacement Surgeon at KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital, Belagavi Dr Rajendra Bhandankar who was felicitated at Shivamogga for his outstanding medical services has advocated a holistic approach to medicine urging medical professionals to uphold the dignity of the medical profession. He was speaking at the Conference of the Karnataka Orthopaedic Association Conference-2024 (KOACON-2024) hosted at Subbayya Medical College, Shivamogga. 

“ Medical profession is a noblest vocation beyond healing, hence doctors should bear profound responsibility for the betterment of society, advocating for radical transformations,” Dr Bhandankar said . Apart from clinical achievements, a doctors success should be measured by their commitment to serve the marginalized and disadvantaged with dignity and respect, he ascertained. 

He also shared anecdotes of his journey as both a medical practitioner and a tabla maestro, highlighting the influence of legends like late Gangubai Hangal in shaping his holistic approach to healthcare. “This inspired me to spearhead initiatives such as a music school at the KLES University and organising musical programs for the patients,” he ascertained.

Highlighting a surge in conditions like arthritis, and obesity he said indiscriminate use of painkillers/steroids, and sports injuries caused damage. Hence, role of anesthetists, physiotherapists, nurses, and surgeons in optimal patient care is vital he said. 

 He urged doctors to educate the masses on the importance of lifestyle modifications to keep diseases like diabetes, hypertension & stroke away highlighting that emotional well-being and mindfulness are important. 

“ Doctors succumbing due to professional pressures is a cause of concern, hence thier involvement in social work and nation-building activities are important,”  Dr Bhandankar said urging doctors to embrace meditation for inner peace and resilience. He also appealed medicos to integrate medicine, music, meditation, and movement in addressing societal needs and fostering holistic well-being.

Over 1000 Orthopaedic Surgeons took part in the conference.
